Workday Release 2026R1 introduces important updates within Absence and Time Tracking. These changes impact user experience, time governance and compliance monitoring, particularly for organisations operating in Europe.
In this blog, we highlight selected 2026R1 updates reviewed by Poonam Chaudhari, Senior Workday Consultant at SuccessDay. With more than 11 years of ERP experience and over 7 years working with Workday, Poonam supports organisations in designing structured and compliant Time Tracking and Absence solutions. Below are the 2026R1 updates that matter most in practice.
1. The “New Absence Experience” Is No Longer Optional
The most significant change for the workforce is the mandatory move to the Manage Absence view.
| Feature | Legacy Experience | 2026R1 “Unified” Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Request & Correct Time Off | Jumping between “Request” and “Correct” | One single unified “Request Absence” view |
| Viewing Schedules | Checking schedules, balances and approved events in separate tasks | Integrated view of schedules, balances and approved events under “Manage Absence” |
| Requirement | Optional or phased rollout | Mandatory transition as of March 14 |
Recommendation:
This isn’t just a technical switch. It is a behavioural change. Don’t just turn it on. Build a communication plan that shows people the Team Coverage Overlay. That is the feature that wins them over.
2. Segmented Security for Time Entry Codes
A major win for data integrity. Workday now allows organisations to prevent users from editing or deleting time blocks containing codes they do not have access to through Segmented Security.
Recommendation:
Enable the security per time type as soon as possible. It virtually eliminates accidental or intentional modifications to restricted data, drastically reducing payroll leakage and manual audit corrections.
3. AI-Driven “Intelligent” Time Entry
Workday is now predicting time types based on worker history and schedules.
Recommendation:
Pair this with the Workday Self-Service Agent in Teams or Slack. Let the system flag time anomalies where they occur, so managers spend less time hunting for missed punches and more time leading.
4. Automated “Time Accumulators” & Rest-Period Auditing
With the EU Working Time Directive tightening, monitoring the 48 hour week and 11 hour daily rest manually is a liability. 2026R1 introduces robust Time Accumulators with real-time validation alerts.
Recommendation:
Use these accumulators alongside Composite Reporting to proactively demonstrate fair pay and compliance for work of equal value.
5. Frictionless Localisation with AI Translation
Transformation often stalls at the language barrier. 2026R1 introduces Machine Translation for Notifications, integrated with the Notification Designer, which is particularly relevant for European works councils.
Recommendation:
Generate local language “Leave Approvals” or “Time Exceptions” in seconds. Ensure a worker in Munich and a worker in Madrid receive compliant communications in their native tongue without a massive translation budget.
My Overall Take
Digital transformation in Europe is not just about moving to the cloud. It is about using data to prove you are a fair, compliant and transparent employer. Workday 2026R1 closes the gap between the Workday app and where employees actually spend their time.
