The crucial role of regression testing in HRIT

It’s almost time for another new release of Workday: Workday 2023R2. Before the new release is automatically rolled out, extensive testing is highly recommended, warns Aitor Cia Lozano, young professional at SuccessDay. As in any new HRIT software releases, such as the systems of Oracle, SuccessFactors and Ceridian Dayforce. Therefore, he recommends organizations to make use of the one-month test window that vendors typically provide for checking new functionalities and features. In this blog, Aitor tells you all about the importance of regression testing in HRIT.

Let’s start this blog with explaining what regression testing is. Regression testing is a software testing methodology that is executed after every change to ensure that changes do not lead to any unintended issues. In the context of HRIT, which deals with vital processes such as payroll, employee records management, performance evaluations, and more, maintaining the integrity of these systems is paramount. Regression testing involves systematically testing the entire application to identify any unintended side effects introduced by new code changes or system updates.

Workday has two main releases per year, underscoring the significant emphasis on continuously enhancing the system. “In such cases, ensuring the proper functioning of your tenants is of the utmost importance”, Aitor stresses. “This is accomplished through conducting rigorous testing to ensure that everything operates correctly within the one-month test window that vendors typically provide for checking the new functionalities of the system.”

The value of a Preview Tenant

The second release of this year (Workday2023R2), which goes live in September 8th, promises enhanced performance management features and improved reporting capabilities amongst others. However, these changes, while beneficial, may inadvertently impact other critical modules such as payroll, benefits administration, and employee records management. Without thorough regression testing, the new features in Release 2 could potentially disrupt existing functionalities.

For instance, a performance management enhancement might inadvertently alter calculations used in payroll processing, resulting in incorrect compensation amounts. Such issues could lead to employee dissatisfaction, financial discrepancies, and even regulatory non-compliance. That’s why Workday offers a Preview Tenant to customers. This testing tenant is typically available for any alternative testing purposes, for instance in case of an implementation of a third-party app.

Workday enters the updates of every new release in the Preview Tenant one month before they will do so in the Production Tenant. In this case from August 4th 2023 until September 8th. Therefore, organizations currently have only a few weeks left to test the new software and put things in order if problems arise. “So make use of this gratefully!”, the SuccessDay consultant says.

The importance of regression testing in HRIT

This is why regression testing in HRIT is a good idea:

  • Preserving System Stability
HRIT systems like Workday are complex, interconnected ecosystems. Even seemingly minor code changes can inadvertently disrupt other functionalities, leading to system instability. Regression testing serves as a safety net, ensuring that these interconnected elements continue to work harmoniously despite updates.
  • Mitigating Risks
In a domain as sensitive as HR, errors or glitches in HRIT systems can lead to serious consequences, such as inaccurate payroll calculations, compliance violations, or even employee dissatisfaction. Regression testing helps identify and rectify these issues before they impact the organization.
  • Compliance and Legal Obligations
Many HR processes involve adherence to legal regulations and industry standards. Regression testing guarantees that these compliance-related functionalities remain intact after system updates, reducing the risk of non-compliance and potential legal consequences.
  • Enhancing User Experience
HRIT systems are usually used by both employees, managers, and HR professionals. Any disruptions in functionality can hamper user experience, leading to frustration and decreased productivity. Regression testing ensures that the user interface and experience remain consistent and user-friendly.
  • Cost and Time Efficiency
Fixing issues identified post-update can be significantly more time-consuming and costly than catching them during regression testing. By detecting and addressing problems early, organizations can save resources and maintain operational efficiency.

Systematic approach

To effectively execute regression testing for your HCM software, it is essential to establish a systematic approach that guarantees the integrity of your HR processes. This involves defining comprehensive test scenarios for each module in scope, executing them diligently, and scrutinizing the outcomes to ensure that the new system updates do not adversely affect your operations.

You can divide this systematic approach into three steps:

  • Defining Test Scenarios
Before embarking on regression testing, it is crucial to outline a set of well-defined test scenarios that encompass the various functionalities of your HCM software. Aitor: “These scenarios should cover both typical and advanced use cases, replicating the processes that are central to your organization’s HR operations.” Collaborate closely with HRIT experts and stakeholders to identify these scenarios, taking into account real-world scenarios that capture the complexity and diversity of your HR processes.
  • Module-Specific Testing
Given the complex nature of HCM software, it is prudent to categorize your regression testing efforts by module. Each module, such as HCM, Recruitment, Absence, and Talent & Performance, should undergo rigorous testing to ensure its stability and coherence post-release. “By segmenting your testing efforts by module, you can focus on specific areas of your system and highlight any anomalies before your production tenant gets refreshed with the new features of the software update. SuccessDay can provide experts testing on their module of expertise.
  • Continuous Improvement
Regression testing involves a repetitive process. As you conduct multiple cycles of regression testing across various software releases, it becomes important to monitor trends in test results, recognize patterns of failure, and adapt your test scenarios accordingly. Sustained improvement guarantees that your regression testing approach advances together with the development of your HCM software, leading to enhanced efficiency in your testing efforts.

Conclusion

By implementing comprehensive regression testing before deploying the update, organizations can ensure that the new features integrate seamlessly into the existing system architecture. Any inconsistencies or problems can be identified, isolated, and addressed, minimizing the risk of system disruptions and maximizing the benefits of the update.

“In conclusion, regression testing plays a pivotal role in maintaining the stability and reliability of your HCM software, especially in the face of regular system updates”, Aitor says. By meticulously defining test scenarios per module, conducting comprehensive testing, and adapting your approach based on insights gained, you can ensure that your HR processes remain functional throughout every system software release.
