The 2 most promising developments during Ceridian INSIGHTS—according to SuccessDay
Bas Eggelaar, SuccessDay, visited Ceridian INSIGHTS in Las Vegas from November 7 to 10, its theme this year being leadership in the new world of work. This HCM vendor is making great strides and explained the latest developments and innovations during the conference. In this blog, Bas lists the most important ones for you.
Early November, the two founders of SuccessDay were invited to Las Vegas to see the latest developments and innovations that Ceridian is working on. Bas: “We saw firsthand why Ceridian is gaining so much market share. This year they entered the top right corner of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant. This means they are high on completeness of vision and the ability to execute that vision.” Along with Workday, Oracle and SAP, Ceridian is among the leaders of cloud HCM suites for enterprises with more than a thousand employees.
Unlike the other platforms, Ceridian has no ambition to simply “add” Finance to HR and expand their Dayforce software toward ERP. “The platform remains dedicated to HR and particularly excels in Core HR and Time and Attendance, with an integrated Payroll module. Especially in the Manufacturing and Retail corner, this provides opportunities,” Bas says. SuccessDay is platform agnostic and takes care of a growing number of customers who have chosen Dayforce, both in North America and Europe. Particularly the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), which still lags somewhat behind the Netherlands in terms of digitalization of HR—and has relatively many large companies, is an interesting region for Ceridian, according to Bas.
Promising innovations
Bas saw several promising announcements and new developments during Ceridian INSIGHTS. Like all HCM software vendors, Cerdian is also working on some fine technical developments around skills. However, Bas sees challenges to its successful use. “Everyone in HR land is working on skills. It reminds me very much of competency management, which everyone was caught up in 20 years ago. A lot of time and effort was put into it, big competence books were written with 1000 competences at 5 different levels. And … no one actually used it. I think that will happen again with skills. After all, you’re extremely dependent on whether employees are going to fill out their skills and keep track of them in the system. And I don’t expect them to suddenly start doing that en masse. Besides, mastering a skill is dependent on individual interpretation and therefore super subjective. I may think I’m the best bread baker, but whether I can actually do it is something else. The theory is great, but in practice I don’t see how it’s going to work.”
However, he is impressed with Ceridian’s solution for providing companies with the ability to quickly and easily tap into the flexible labor pool. This solution was launched during the Las Vegas conference and is called the Ideal Talent Marketplace. This can be seen as ’the Uber of the job market’: a platform that matches workers based on their skills, experience, and availability. Powered by Ceridian’s Dayforce Skills Engine. Ideal Talent Marketplace helps employers derive skills from resumes and categorize them into more common skills for certain industries. “The smart software is designed to help Dayforce clients navigate a world of workforce shortages, low flexibility and rapidly changing demand. At the same time, employees are looking for more flexibility and a better work-life balance. The Talent Marketplace provides employees with personalized job recommendations that match their skills and preferences.”
Advantages of platform work
More and more workers and employers know how to find each other for short jobs through online platforms. Data from the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) show that by early 2021, between 0.4% and 2.8% of the labor force was working through a platform, representing at least 34,000 platform workers. Platforms offer several benefits to workers, employers, and customers alike. Platforms offer jobs that can be done online or offline, at any time and from any location. There is often a choice between ad hoc and scheduled work.
Platform work can also be a solution if education or background make it difficult to find work. The search area expands, you can easily search for jobs at your level, you don’t have to leave your house if that is not convenient, and you decide your own working hours and the number of hours you want to work. Platform work therefore helps more people find work, including people with a disadvantage. In recent studies by SCP and SER you can read more about the main advantages of platform work.
Opportunities for Europe
Ideal Talent Marketplace will be available to Dayforce charter customers and workers in 2023. In the short term, Bas primarily sees opportunities for Ceridian’s new talent marketplace for companies in retail and manufacturing. “Here people often work in shifts. Because the platform is integrated with Ceridian’s full-suite HCM solution, you can house everything in one system: the matching of supply and demand, the shifts worked, the remuneration, et cetera. This saves you a lot of administrative work as an organization.”
The Ideal Talent Marketplace can be used in two ways: with or without intermediaries such as employment agencies, intermediaries or staffing agencies. Bas: “If you take the middleman out of the equation, there is more money for the employee. People who take a job are employed by Ceridian. They do the background check, take care of the payroll, but also make sure people are properly insured. A favorable development, as many politicians and interest groups are concerned about issues such as safety, insurance, and fair compensation for workers in the platform economy.”
On-demand payout
Another announcement Bas is excited about is Dayforce Wallet. A modern way to pay employees that, next to the US, has recently been introduced to the UK. The extension of Dayforce Payroll provides employees with on-demand access to their earned pay using an intuitive mobile app and accompanying prepaid card. “Ceridian can hereby eliminate once-a-month payouts. It was once created that way because payroll couldn’t handle it otherwise. With Dayforce Wallet you can, at any time after completing a shift, say: I want to be paid. That offers people a lot of flexibility and freedom of choice, which is nice in today’s uncertain economic conditions. At the same time, of course, you have to make sure that people can handle this responsibility.”
Bas expects Ceridian to continue to invest heavily in innovations in the coming period and to continue to grow its market share. “That upper-right corner of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant is no fluke if you ask me.”
