As we prepare for the second edition of the HR Technology Awards, we are thrilled to feature Derk Jan Koole from Mercer, who served as a judge in the inaugural event and is back to lend his expertise this year. In this interview, Derk shares his insights from the first edition and discusses the importance of HR technology in transforming the HR landscape.
What are some lessons or insights you learned during the first edition of the HR Technology Awards?
One key lesson is that HR Tech can no longer function without AI, as nearly every provider integrates some form of AI, often leveraging it as a broad concept with significant marketing appeal. Additionally, we are still learning how to effectively implement large HRIS projects, with many attendees mentioning they were on their third HRIS implementation, applying lessons from previous experiences. Another lesson is that we have seen very progressive applications using the latest available technologies, while some companies are still focusing on establishing their HRIS basics. Lastly, most applications are geared towards the talent side of HR, such as assessments and surveys, with fewer focusing on Compensation & Benefits or Strategic Workforce planning.
How do you see the evolution of HR tech in the past year? Are there any trends or innovations that have been particularly noticeable?
The most significant trend is the acceleration brought by General AI, which emphasizes the importance of data quality. Companies are realizing that you can’t leverage General AI effectively without good data. This has created a gap between companies with solid data practices and those still struggling to catch up. The exciting part of General AI is its accessibility, allowing many to experiment on a small scale not immediately needing to commit to larger projects.
Why do you think it’s important to have specific awards for HRIT, and what does that add to the HR landscape?
With so much happening in HR Tech, these awards provide a valuable overview and help highlight noteworthy developments. They serve as a preselection of innovative tools and offer inspiration by showcasing what others have achieved, often with great effort or creativity. This helps organizations understand the benefits of HR Tech and encourages them to explore new solutions.
Can you tell us more about your assessment process for the nominees? What are the most important criteria for you?
My main criterion is how the product benefits employees. While much of HR Tech focuses on HR processes, I prioritize the employee experience. I look for technology that makes work or the employee experience easier and more enjoyable for employees, allowing for individualization and improving their overall experience.
Are there certain trends or themes you will pay extra attention to?
AI will be a significant focus, particularly how it enhances interactions between line managers and employees. I’m also interested in ensuring that these tools are not just nice-to-have but truly improve the overall experience and productivity.
Did you receive feedback from last year’s winners or nominees about how they used their recognition?
Yes, many winners used the recognition effectively in their marketing. For example, Crunchr leveraged it to enhance their brand, and Just Eat Takeaway received notable attention. This recognition helps companies showcase their achievements internally and externally, boosting pride and credibility. It also aids in personal branding, leading to more invitations to seminars and conferences.
Companies that participate and do well gain significant exposure and recognition. It demonstrates to the outside world and internally that they are leading in HR innovation. The awards provide a platform for showcasing their work, which can lead to new opportunities and partnerships.
Are there any additional thoughts you’d like to share about the HR Technology Awards?
Participating in these awards, whether as a judge or attendee, broadens your perspective on HR Tech. You get to see a wide range of solutions that might not directly apply to your field but can inspire new ideas. The energy and innovation from startups are particularly exciting and contribute to a dynamic and fun environment.
